The Secret Language of Refurbished Tech: Understanding Device Grades Before You Buy
Every pre-owned device has a story.
One may have spent its life protected inside a case and still look almost untouched. Another may show a few marks from daily commutes, study sessions and years of reliable use. A third may have been professionally restored after a worn or faulty component needed attention.
When these devices arrive at TechUp, their stories are translated into a clear condition grade.
Words such as Premium, Excellent, Good and Acceptable help customers understand how a device is likely to look before making a purchase. However, those words are often misunderstood.
Does Good mean unreliable? Is Excellent the same as new? Does Refurbished automatically mean every component has been replaced?
Not quite.
A TechUp grade primarily describes the device’s cosmetic appearance. It tells you about visible wear, presentation and the condition of the exterior. It does not mean that a lower-grade device is intentionally sold with fewer working features.
Think of the grade as the story of the device’s journey.
A Premium device says, “I have been used before, but you may find it difficult to tell.”
An Excellent device says, “I almost look new, although a close inspection may reveal where I have been.”
A Good device says, “I have signs of everyday life, but I am ready for the next chapter.”
An Acceptable device says, “My journey is visible, and that is reflected in my lower price.”
Understanding this language makes it easier to choose a device that suits both your expectations and your budget.
TechUp device grades at a glance
| Condition | The device’s story | What you may notice | Often suitable for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brand New | “My journey has not started yet.” | Unused device, generally with original packaging and supplied accessories | Premium gifts, business purchases and customers wanting an unused product |
| Open Box | “My box has been opened, but I have seen little or no regular use.” | Minimal handling, possibly opened or replacement packaging | Customers wanting a near-new product at a possible saving |
| Premium Pre-Owned | “I have been owned before, but I still look close to new.” | No visible signs of use under normal viewing; no cracks, chips or dents | Gifting, professional settings and customers who value presentation |
| Excellent Pre-Owned | “I almost look new.” | Light signs of use or faint marks visible under close inspection | Everyday users wanting a strong balance of appearance and savings |
| Good Pre-Owned | “I have been part of daily life.” | Minor scratches, scuffs, small dings or other signs of normal use | Students, families and practical buyers |
| Acceptable Pre-Owned | “My history is easy to see, but I still have more to offer.” | Noticeable scratches, scuffs, small dents or cosmetic wear | Work devices, backups and customers focused on the lowest price |
| Refurbished | “Something needed attention, so I was professionally restored.” | Cosmetic condition varies; repaired or replaced components may be involved | Customers comfortable with a professionally restored and tested device |
The most important distinction: appearance is not functionality
Imagine two phones of the same model.
The Premium phone looks almost untouched. The Good phone has some minor scratches on the housing and a small mark near one corner.
Those visual differences affect the grade and price, but they do not automatically mean the Good phone performs differently.
Eligible pre-owned, open-box and refurbished products must pass the relevant functionality checks unless a specific issue is clearly disclosed in the individual listing.
Phones and tablets are tested using Phonecheck, which performs more than 40 checks. Depending on the device, these may include:
-
Display and touchscreen
-
Cameras
-
Speakers and microphones
-
Charging
-
Buttons and switches
-
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
-
Mobile connectivity
-
Sensors
-
Device identification and status
Laptops, smartwatches and other technology are assessed through TechUp’s standard testing and inspection process. Checks vary by product and can include the display, keyboard, trackpad, storage, memory, ports, charging, cameras, audio and operating-system functionality.
The grade speaks about the outside. Testing helps determine whether the device is ready to perform its intended role.
Premium: a story that is almost invisible
Picture someone shopping for a graduation gift.
They want the recipient to open the box and feel excited. They are comfortable choosing pre-owned technology, but presentation matters. They do not want obvious scratches, dents or visible signs of a previous owner.
That customer may be best suited to Premium Pre-Owned.
Premium is TechUp’s highest pre-owned cosmetic grade. These devices typically have:
-
No visible signs of previous use under normal viewing
-
No cracks, chips or dents
-
A clean, near-new overall appearance
-
A minimum of 90% battery health where capacity can be reliably measured
-
Completed functionality and cosmetic testing
Premium may be a strong choice for:
-
Birthday or graduation gifts
-
Professionals meeting clients
-
Customers upgrading from an older device
-
Buyers who want pre-owned value without obvious cosmetic wear
Premium does not mean Brand New. The device has had a previous journey, but its story is difficult to see during normal use.
Excellent: “I almost look new”
An Excellent device tells a slightly different story.
It may have been carefully used, carried in a case and handled responsibly. Under normal viewing, it should still look clean and well presented. Look closely, however, and you may find a faint mark that reveals its previous life.
Excellent devices may have:
-
Light signs of previous use
-
Faint surface marks visible under close inspection
-
No cracks or dents
-
No deep scratches
-
A minimum of 80% battery health where capacity can be reliably measured
-
Completed functionality and cosmetic testing
This grade may suit:
-
Professionals who want a presentable daily device
-
University students seeking quality and value
-
Everyday users who care about appearance
-
Customers wanting to save more than they might with Premium
Excellent is often the middle ground for customers who want a device that presents well but do not need its previous journey to be completely invisible.
Good: built for the next chapter
Now imagine a student choosing a laptop or phone.
They need something dependable for lectures, research, assignments, communication and entertainment. They plan to use a protective case, and a few minor marks do not matter nearly as much as getting the right model within budget.
A Good Pre-Owned device may be the practical choice.
Good devices may show:
-
Minor scratches, scuffs or cosmetic marks
-
Small dings or signs of everyday use
-
No cracks
-
A minimum of 80% battery health where capacity can be reliably measured
-
Completed functionality and cosmetic testing
Good condition may be well suited to:
-
High school and university students
-
Families purchasing a first device for a child
-
Customers who use cases and screen protectors
-
Buyers who prioritise specifications over appearance
-
Anyone seeking stronger value from their budget
A Good device does not hide its past. It simply shows that it has been used before.
For many buyers, those small cosmetic signs are an easy compromise when they can purchase the model, storage capacity or performance level they actually need.
Acceptable: when value matters most
Some customers are not looking for a device that will sit perfectly on a showroom display.
They may need a backup phone for emergencies, a device for field work, a temporary replacement or an affordable option for basic everyday tasks.
An Acceptable Pre-Owned device tells its story openly.
It may have:
-
Noticeable scratches, scuffs or cosmetic wear
-
Small dents, dings or marks on the housing
-
More visible signs of previous use
-
No cracks
-
A minimum of 80% battery health where capacity can be reliably measured
-
Completed functionality testing
Acceptable may be suitable for:
-
Backup or emergency phones
-
Worksites, warehouses or operational teams
-
Temporary replacement devices
-
Customers using heavy-duty protective cases
-
Buyers whose priority is the lowest available price
This grade is not intended for someone expecting a near-new appearance. It is for the buyer who understands that visible wear can create an opportunity for greater savings.
Brand New: a journey not yet started
A Brand New product is unused and has not previously been sold as a pre-owned device.
It will generally include:
-
An unused device
-
Original retail packaging
-
Manufacturer-supplied accessories
-
No signs of previous use
Where the product is specifically described as Brand New – Sealed, the original manufacturer or distributor seal should remain intact.
Packaging can occasionally have marks from transportation or storage. Any important packaging damage, missing accessories or other product-specific information should be disclosed in the listing.
Open Box: opened does not always mean used
An Open Box device has packaging that has previously been opened, but that does not necessarily mean it has experienced regular use.
Its box may have been opened because the product was:
-
Inspected or verified
-
Briefly handled
-
Displayed
-
Activated without regular use
-
Returned before resale
-
Supplied in opened or damaged packaging
An Open Box device might say, “My introduction has already happened, but my journey has barely begun.”
These products are inspected and tested where appropriate. They should generally have minimal signs of handling, although faint marks may occasionally be present.
Original packaging and accessories can vary, so the individual listing should always be reviewed.
Refurbished: a story of restoration
Refurbished is not simply another cosmetic grade.
A Refurbished device has been professionally restored and tested for functionality. Something may have required attention before the device was ready for its next owner.
The process may include:
-
Replacing a faulty, worn or damaged component
-
Professional cleaning and restoration
-
Functionality and cosmetic testing
-
Installing a replacement battery where stated
-
Using genuine or high-quality compatible parts where required
Not every pre-owned device requires refurbishment.
Some devices arrive functioning correctly and only need to be tested, cleaned and graded. Others require a repair or replacement component before they meet TechUp’s standards.
A refurbished device therefore says, “Part of my journey needed attention, and I was professionally prepared to continue.”
Any important restoration details, new battery claims or product-specific conditions should be stated in the individual listing.
What battery health adds to the story
Battery health estimates how much capacity remains compared with when the battery was new.
Where maximum capacity can be reliably measured, TechUp’s minimum pre-owned standards are:
-
Premium: minimum 90%
-
Excellent: minimum 80%
-
Good: minimum 80%
-
Acceptable: minimum 80%
Battery health should not be confused with a guaranteed number of hours between charges.
Runtime varies according to screen brightness, apps, background activity, network signal, connectivity settings, software, charging habits and general use.
Some laptops, Android devices, smartwatches and other products may not report a directly comparable battery-health percentage. Where relevant and available, battery information should be included in the individual product listing.
No two journeys look exactly the same
Two devices can belong to the same grade without having identical marks.
One Good-condition phone might have light scratching on the back. Another may have a small ding on the frame. Both can still meet the overall Good grading standard.
This is why a grade should be understood as a description of the device’s overall cosmetic condition—not a promise that every mark will appear in the same place.
Representative images may also be used in some listings. Unless the listing states that actual-device photographs are shown, the pictures may represent the model and colour rather than the exact unit supplied.
Which story belongs with you?
Choose Premium when you are buying a gift or want the closest possible pre-owned appearance to new.
Choose Excellent when you want a well-presented device and are comfortable with faint signs of its previous journey.
Choose Good when you are shopping for a student, family member or everyday user who values function and savings over minor cosmetic wear.
Choose Acceptable when price is the priority and noticeable signs of previous use are not a concern.
Consider Open Box when you want a product with minimal handling and do not mind opened or replacement packaging.
Choose Refurbished when you are comfortable with a device that has been professionally restored and tested, with relevant details disclosed in the listing.
Final thoughts
Every pre-owned device has travelled a different road.
The TechUp grading system gives customers a practical way to understand that journey before buying. Premium, Excellent, Good and Acceptable are not rankings of who deserves a reliable device. They are descriptions that help match cosmetic expectations with budget and intended use.
The best grade is therefore not automatically the highest one.
It is the grade whose story fits your own.
For one customer, that could be a Premium phone chosen as a special gift. For another, it could be an Excellent laptop for professional use. A student may find the best value in Good condition, while an Acceptable device could be exactly what someone needs for work or as a dependable backup.
Read the grade, review the individual listing and choose the device that is ready to begin its next chapter with you.
