Experience and Explore the eSIM

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital version of the traditional SIM card that lets you activate a mobile plan without needing a physical card. This allows users to easily switch between carriers or plans directly on their device.

Key features of eSIMs on iPhones include:

  • Multiple eSIMs: You can store eight or more eSIMs on an iPhone, though only one or two can be active at a time, depending on the model. This is helpful for managing different numbers or carrier plans.
  • Dual SIM capability: iPhones with eSIM technology allow you to use two phone numbers at once, using either a combination of eSIM and physical SIM or two eSIMs.
  • Convenience: eSIMs make it simple to set up mobile service, especially when traveling internationally or managing work and personal numbers.

Setting Up an eSIM

                                       iPhone

                                     Android

    • Go to Settings > Mobile > Add eSIM. You can transfer a phone number from a nearby iPhone, or scan a QR code provided by your Service provider

    • Go to Settings: Open your phone’s settings and navigate to Connections or Network & Internet, depending on your phone.
    • Use your iPhone’s camera to scan the QR code provided by your carrier, or manually enter the information provided.
    • Select Mobile Network: Choose Mobile Network or SIM Card Manager.
    • Download eSIM: Some carriers allow eSIM activation through their app or a direct download to your phone.
    • Add a New Plan: You should see an option to Add mobile plan or Add eSIM. Tap on it.
    • Set Primary and Secondary Lines: After adding the eSIM, you’ll be prompted to label it (e.g., Work, Personal). You can set the default line for calls, messages, and data usage.
    • Scan QR Code: Use your phone's camera to scan the QR code provided by your carrier or manually enter the details.
  • Switch Between Plans:
    • Confirm Activation:
    • Go to Settings > Cellular. Here, you can choose which eSIM or physical SIM will handle data and which will be used for calls and messages.
    • After scanning, follow the on-screen instructions to confirm activation of the eSIM. You may need to restart your phone for the eSIM to activate.
    • Toggle between the lines to select your primary one, and adjust your data usage preferences.
    • Label Your eSIM:
  • Activate/Deactivate Lines:
    • You can label the new eSIM to differentiate it (e.g., "Work" or "Personal").
    • Under Cellular in the settings, you can toggle any installed eSIM on or off, depending on which you want to use at any time.
    • Choose your default settings for data, calls, and messages if you have multiple SIMs.

Managing eSIM on Android

  • Switch Between SIMs:

    • Go to Settings > Connections> SIM Card Manager (or similar), where you can toggle between your physical SIM and eSIM for data, calls, and messages.

  • Deactivate or Remove eSIM:

    • If you no longer need the eSIM, you can deactivate it from the SIM Card Manager settings or remove it entirely by selecting the option to delete the eSIM profile.

Using Dual SIM (Two Numbers at Once)

  • Calls and Messages: You can use both phone numbers at the same time for calls, SMS, and iMessage. When placing a call or sending a message, you can select which number to use.
  • Data Usage: You can designate one SIM for data usage, but you can also switch it depending on which carrier has better coverage or rates.

Roaming and International Use

  • eSIMs are particularly useful for traveling, as you can add a local carrier’s plan without removing your home SIM. Just activate the new eSIM for the duration of your trip and deactivate it afterward.

There is no such thing as ‘away’. When we throw anything away it must go somewhere.
